Updates

September 2016

Seaford is featured in the September Issue of British Railway Modelling. A final gallery of the layout , some of these photos were used in the magazine feature, is below .

24th February 2016

Seaford is no more! I move house next month and Seaford was not built to be transported so over five days I have dismantled the layout. Locos and stock along with anything re-usable will go into storage for the next project. The baseboards and much of the track took a trip to the dump. Photos here

February 2016

A few running sessions of late in view of the impending dismantling of the layout because of a house move. Lots of photos here

January 2015-2016

The major construction of the railway was completed with the completion of the C&W depot last year. Time has been spent adding small details to the layout. Also the usual task of weathering stock continued. Fleet additions since the last update have been 08883 24081 31117 44002 and D1065. 40118 was withdrawn and replaced with a new bodyshell as 40063 and I made a better job of the shawplan windscreens this time.

Backscenes have been added and have made a real difference to the layout - although adding them when nearing the end of construction is not recommended unless you have easy access to the back of the layout! Gaugemaster and ID backscenes were used.

Time has been spent weathering wagon stock and making removable loads; Brake Vans, Ballast Wagons, Spoil Wagons and open wagons.

Some semaphore signals have been added for Bridge Junction and Seaford Yard. Photos here and here. All are WR design Ratio kits and are cosmetic only.

The railway has been populated with people from Bachmann and Preiser ranges. Photos here here here and here. Also some trees have been added.

February 2013-2014

Despite the lack of updates on here, the railway is progressing (slowly);

The goods depot canopy has been completed. Photos here and here

Having originally intended to use semaphore signals in Seaford station but due to time contraints I decided to switch to cosmetic colour lights signals which are amazingly simple to install... This required the removal of the manual signal box and replacement with a more modern structure which is now adjacent to the station. The signals are by Knightwing. Photos here here and here

The last major structure to build was the wagon repair depot.

New locos are 37199 37277 50040 and Class 128 DMU

February 2012

The canopy of the goods shed is almost complete. Photos here and here.

Recent ebay bargains are 25120 & 40004

December 2011

Finally a start made on finishng the goods shed. The basic card structure has been built and installed and the next job is the canopy to go with it. Photos here and here

A real effort has been made to get the rolling stock weathered and a good selection has been done recently. Examples are here here and here

e-bay bargains since the last update are 08027 08778 20141 and 55002

December 2010

Again not much done to the scenic side of the layout during the intervening months since the last update, although the materials have been stockpiled to scratch build the goods depot and adjoining canopy. Also thought has been given to providing the railway with some signals!

Recent e-bay bargains were a Hornby 50 and Bachmann 25 which have been transformed into 50027 and 25086

A Class 03 and Class 105 DMU have also been added to the fleet

January 2010

Not a great deal done to the railway since the last update although a number of locos have been added to the collection; Two Bachmann 25's became 25064 and 25225. A Heljan 26037. A third Bachmann Class 20.

08402 has become 08418, 45114 has become 45015 and 5380 has become 27102. Hornby DMU's have been repainted and detailed - class 101 & 121.

A few photos from around the layout added to the photos page

August 2008

A selection of photos depicting the recent work on the entrance to the fiddle yard are here here & here. The basic scenic work in this area is now virtually complete, incuding the construction of 'Sproston Green' station on the high level line where a new level crossing has also been installed.
The goods depot has had the stone platforms fitted - a suitable buidling for the platforms is now at the planning stage.
The last piece of ballasting has been done (!). The area at the end of the depot platforms is now the only section on the layout that remains to be 'landscaped'.
Construction of Bridge Junction signal box has started.

A cheap alternative to a rolling road was secured from e-bay (thanks Matt!) and has proved most useful. This being essential to allow the running in of new locos on end to end layouts such as this.

Two new DMU's added to the fleet from Hornby - a 101 and 121. Also a Heljan class 27 has also been purchased.

July 2008

Another prolonged dormant period followed by frenzied activity! An area that has so far not had any scenic attention is the section leading to the fiddle yard so this area has been concentrated on with a backboard being built and a set of Hornby arches butchered to fit. A building to fill the role of depot store has also been found. Once these were in place a start on the scenic work could be made. Another area of expose chipboard was behind the wagon works and this roadway has now been completed
A new shunter has been added to the fleet
A selection of road vehicles have been purchased to compliment the indusrial areas of the railway as well as a bus

February 2008

Both Bachmann class 20's have been completed to become 20069 and 20142. Two new purchases in the shape of the Hornby 31 and Bachmann Peak which will both go through works in due course.
I recently tried out some TCS decoders as Lenz were in short supply and was amazed at the results. A M1P decoder was installed into Hornby 08402, which was a poor performer with a Lenz Gold, has been transformed and can now negotiate complex pointwork at very low speed without stalling. The same chip was installed into Bachmann 08828 again producing significantly improved performace at low speed. The whole shunting fleet will be so treated with TCS products.
47464 has been remotored using a Hornby chassis from its reworked Lima 47. As I quite like the Lima model, this proved cheaper and easier than a ModelTorque conversion. The other three Lima 47's will also be done.
On the scenic side the 'water' in the docks has been done using Woodland Scenics E-Z Water which is heated up, poured into required area and allowed to set. Whilst not perfect its not bad for a first attempt. A small hill has been made to create a 'break' between the branch line and the area that will become the goods depot.

December 2007

D1067 has become D1023 Western Fusilier and both Bachmann class 20's are now in works to emerge as a couple of grimy vo machines.
Lima 47269 has been retired after a slight accident with a buffer stop. It was my intention to re-motor all my Lima 47's as I was quite happy with the look of them however having seen the Bachmann offering this may well change...
More work has been carried out on the docks and once the diesel tug is finished the work on creating the 'water' can be done.
The rail served scrap yard has been finished. Pics here and here
The Peco point allowing access to the diesel depot broke over Christmas requiring its replacement - a real pain as the area had been ballasted and the point was very much glued in place! Anticipating real grief getting this changed I put off the task for a number of days but in the event the process was quite painless.
The aid realistic operation of the layout (and to make the trains look good) a number of removable wagon loads have been made, initially coal but I will also make them for other loads - ballast, stone, scrap etc. Pics here and here

November 2007

Limited progess over the summer as usual. Two loco projects were finished off; namely 24050 and 47464 . Heljan D1067 has now entered works to emerge as a weatherbeaten D1023..
Lima 27007 has been retired from the fleet and back converted to DC operation. This loco is for sale at £30. Also for sale for the same price are 26014 and 26018. All are to be replaced with the Heljan models due to the superior running qualities on DCC, however all three locos are good runners under DC operation. Please email timATd1023.co.uk if you are interested in purchasing any of these locos.
The last month has seen major work to finish the dockside area. The plasticard 'concrete' has been finished and the various dockside buildings constructed. Photos here and here
Five Parkside wagon kits have been built

January 2007

Landscaping and scenery work continues with the marshalling yard & scrapyard areas essentially complete. The plasticard built steel mill has been suitably weathered, followed by final detailing and has now been fixed in place overlooking the yard.
Attention has turned to the dockyard with the branch having taken on and overgrown look. The whole docks area is in the process of being covered with plasticard. A tedious process to say the least!
The Dapol Dockside Crane is part constructed and will be joined by a second kit on the dockside.

December 2006

A concerted effort will be made over the next couple of months to get the remaining un-landscaped areas finished. This is primarily the dockyard and goods dept areas. Work has started on the roadway into the dockyard. This will also enable the scrapyard to be built.
A low relief office block has been built from 3mm card to cover the unsightly plug socket in the sky.
A new addition to the fleet is the excellent Bachmann Class 108 DMU

November 2006

With the distractions of summer, little progress has been made on the layout - one of the few things completed is 37112 along with the weathering of the recently built Parkside BR 4-wheeled vans.
Purchased over the summer were four of the new Bachmann Mark 2a coaches. These are excellent models and are a very welcome addition to the fleet.
Class 24 5087 is in works for transforming into 24054 and now awaits painting.

April 2006

Work has mostly concentrated on the layout itself in recent weeks with the incline to the dockyard sculpted out of polystyrene which then allowed tracklaying into the dockyard and this marks the completion of tracklaying on the railway. The papier mache covering was completed a few days later.
A new loco has been added to the fleet and both 20's now spend most of the time consisted together as per BR days!
37038 is (slowly) progressing into 37112 and the next loco project has begun

March 2006

A start made on building a few Parkside wagon kits and 3 Vanwides (VWV/VXV's) and a 12t BR Van (VVV) have been built - photo. A 'Southern' CCT and a old 'Grampus' kit have also been constructed. All of these still await weathering.
37038 has been dismantled for repainting/detailing.

February 2006

The Heljan 33 has been transformed from 6572 into 33044. Despite the obvious and disappointing error in the roof profile the loco does look good when viewed from favourable angles
